One of the department’s 3 major annual awards, this award serves to honor the distinguished career of the late Stephen Lagakos and recognize alumni of the department whose research in statistical theory and application, leadership in biomedical research and commitment to teaching have had a major impact on the theory and practice of statistical science.

From the improbable to the possible and beyond: pleading to take risks in order to broaden our field

With the resurgence of conversations regarding improving the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in many professions, including biostatistics and data science, I offer a case study to broaden how we consider aspects of our field at the most critical point – admissions and during the training experience – to support and encourage people from traditionally under-represented backgrounds to survive and thrive. Doing so means deliberately abandoning long-standing traditions to attract and retain the best talent in our field. By incorporating the principles of DCI, we can all cultivate a more holistic understanding of the historical context and current challenges in the field by enabling everyone to see themselves in all aspects of our profession and therefore have a clearer idea of ​​where we are. way in which they could make important contributions to both theory and applications statistics.
